There’s a dragon on the playground
who descended from the skies.
He swooped down on the schoolyard
where he took us by surprise.

He leapt across the blacktop
in a single bounding stride,
erupting flames and lava
to incinerate the slide.

He reared his huge and scaly head
and flapped his leathery wings,
then set the soccer field ablaze
and blackened all the swings.

He cauterized the asphalt
with a sudden, fiery flash.
Then reeled upon the seesaw
and converted it to ash.

He melted all the monkey bars.
The sand was molten glass.
With nothing left to liquefy
he headed for our class.

I doubt we’ll soon be rid of him
despite the fires he’s set.
You see, our teacher likes him,
so he’s now the teacher’s pet.

How to Write a Kenning Poem

What is a Kenning?

Imagine you are a secret agent, and instead of saying the name of something directly, you say it in a secret code; you describe it in a clever new way. That’s what a “kenning” does! A kenning is like a little riddle made of two words that describe something without using its name. For example, instead of “ocean,” you might say “whale-road.” Instead of “boat” you might say “wave-traveler.”  Sounds fun, right?

Origins of Kenning Poems

Kenning poems come from long ago, used by the Vikings and people in Northern Europe. Yes, even Vikings wrote poetry! These poems didn’t just tell a story; they made it exciting with these special word puzzles.

Creating Kennings

To create your own kennings, think about the attributes (qualities or features) and actions (things it does) of your chosen subject. Look for clues to describe your subject in a fun way.

  • Attributes: These are things that describe what your subject is like. If your subject is a tree, its attributes include branches, leaves, a trunk, it’s height, etc. So, you could create kennings like “branch-tower” or “leaf-waver.”
  • Actions: These are things that your subject does. If your subject is a dog, it might “bark,” “run,” or “wag its tail.” From these actions, you could think of kennings like “bark-maker” or “tail-wagger.”

By focusing on both what your subject is like and what it does, you can come up with a whole world of creative kennings. This makes your poem not just a bunch of words, but a lively picture painted with your imagination!

How to Write Your Kenning Poem

1. Choose a Topic: Pick something you like or find interesting. It could be an animal (a cat, a fish, a dinosaur, etc.) a place (your school, the beach, the moon, and so on), or even a person (an artist, a football player, a character from a book or movie, you get the idea).

2. Brainstorm Kennings: Think of descriptive and fun ways to talk about your topic without saying its name. If your topic is a “book,” you might think of “story-haven” or “page-palace.”

3. Put Your Kennings Together: Start putting these kennings into short lines to form a poem. Remember, there’s no need for it to rhyme, and your poem can have as many or as few kennings as you like!

4. Be Creative: The best part about kenning poems is how creative you can be. Mix and match words and see what interesting kennings you can come up with!

Example Kenning Poem

If I choose a cat as my topic, my kenning poem might look like this:

Whisker-painter
Purr-machine
Mouse-chaser
Night-explorer

Or, if I were writing about the ocean, I might create something like this:

Horizon-hugger
Fish-playground
Ship-road
Wave-shaper
Moon-mirror
Tide-cradle

This poem uses kennings to describe various aspects of the ocean, from its interaction with the moon and tides to its role as a habitat for marine life and a path for ships. It paints a picture of the ocean’s vast and dynamic nature.

Give it a Title

Once you are done writing your kenning poem, give it a title. If you want people to know ahead of time what your poem is about, try using the subject as the title. For example, you might simply call your poem “Cat” or “Ocean.”

On the other hand, if you want your poem to be more of a puzzle for readers to figure out, give it a title such as “What Am I?” or “Who Am I?” Then the kennings in your poem are clues to the mystery in the title’s question. Here’s an example. It’s up to you to figure out what this kenning poem is about.

Our Math Teacher's Missing by Kenn Nesbitt

Our math teacher’s missing.
He cannot be found.
We’ve looked high and low but
he’s nowhere around.

We peeked in the classrooms.
We peered through the doors.
We looked in the lockers
and dug through the drawers.

We dropped by the office.
We searched in the halls.
We ran through the bathrooms
inspecting the stalls.

He’s not on the playground
or out on the lawn.
It’s hard to believe, but
our math teacher’s gone.

We can’t say for sure, but
we’re starting to think
it could be because we
have sort of a stink.

And, probably, nothing
has happened to him.
He just knows our math class
is right after gym.

I Dreamed that I Was Flying I Dreamed that I Was Flying

I dreamed that I was in my room
when much to my surprise,
I found that if I flapped my arms
it made me start to rise.

I waved my arms a little more
and floated off the ground,
I rose up to the ceiling
and I had a look around.

I flapped around my bedroom
then decided what I’d do:
I opened up my window,
waved my arms, and out I flew!

I flew around the city
with surprising grace and ease.
I sailed along the rooftops
and I soared among the trees.

I chased a pair of pigeons
’round the playground in the park.
I raced beside a robin
and cavorted with a lark.

And when I tired of flying
and decided I should rest,
I joined a sleeping eagle
for a nap inside his nest.

I woke confused this morning,
and I had to scratch my head,
for underneath my covers
I found feathers in my bed.

Distance learning. What a bore.
Our school’s been closed a month or more.
I’m stuck at home. I’m in my room,
and meeting with my class on Zoom.

There’s no more lunchroom. No PE.
Just studying and tests for me.
There’s no more recess. No more ball.
Just staring at my bedroom wall.

The playground’s closed—the swings, the slide—
and everybody’s stuck inside.
We can’t go out and play with friends.
I hope that, pretty soon, this ends.

I know it’s only for a while,
but here’s a thought that makes me smile:
Although it might not sound so cool,
I just can’t wait to go to school.

I Can't Wait for Summer

I can’t wait for summer, when school days are done,
to spend the days playing outside in the sun.
I won’t have to study. No homework, no tests.
Just afternoons spent on adventures and quests.
Instead of mathematics and writing reports,
I’ll go to the park and play summertime sports.
Instead of assignments, report cards, and grades,
I’ll get to play baseball and watch the parades.
I’ll swing on the playground. I’ll swim in the pool
instead of just practicing lessons in school.
The second the school year is finally done
I’ll spend every minute with friends having fun.
I hardly can wait for the end of the year.
I’m counting the days until summer is here.
It’s hard to be patient. It’s hard to be cool.
It’s hard to believe it’s the first day of school.

I Stuck My Finger Up My Nose

I stuck my finger up my nose
to see what it contained.
I found a bunch of crazy things
that cannot be explained.

I found a dozen rubber bands.
I found a piece of string.
I found my missing basketball.
I found a playground swing.

I found a giant pot of gold.
I found a sailing boat.
I found an ancient castle
with a drawbridge and a moat.

I found a hairy mastodon.
I found a purple car.
I found an Earth-bound starship
from a not too distant star.

But now despite the awesome stuff
I found inside my snout,
I wish I’d never poked in there —
my finger won’t come out!

I Can’t Get Enough of this Pokémon Go


I can’t get enough of this Pokémon Go.
The fever is on me
and starting to grow.
This game is amazing!
I thought you should know.
There’s nothing I want to do more.

I play on the playground.
I play in the park.
I play in the daytime.
I play after dark.
I’m constantly playing,
but I should remark
this game sure is making me sore.

While playing today
I ran into a wall.
I stumbled and fell down
the stairs at the mall.
I tripped on the street and
had such a bad fall,
I probably fractured my toe.

My forehead is hurting.
My bottom feels bad.
This tripping and falling
is making me mad.
The game is amazing,
but maybe I’ve had
enough of this Pokémon Go.

Get Jumping! Making Playground Poetry Using Jump-Rope Rhymes

Jump Rope Poems

Did you know that kids have been skipping rope—or playing some type of very similar game—for hundreds of years? In the United States, skipping rope was a common way for city kids to play in the streets together from the early 1900s through the 1940s. A special version of jumping rope, called Double Dutch because it uses two jump ropes at the same time, was introduced to the children of New York City by Dutch families who had immigrated to America. Double Dutch later became a competitive sport worldwide.

Kids today still enjoy chanting or singing rhyming poems while they skip rope. Jump-rope rhymes allow you to combine the fun of poetry with the physical activity of skipping rope—a great way to stay physically fit while entertaining your brain!
